On 23 March, the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston (UHBW) Bristol Eye Hospital Assessment Service moved to a new location in The Galleries shopping centre, Broadmead, Bristol.

The service was set up to enable the timely assessment and treatment of patients with chronic irreversible sight threatening conditions. During the clinics patients undergo a range of diagnostic tests on the eyes, including complex images, which leads to appropriate treatments being prescribed or confirming that the correct action is being taken to prevent further eyesight deterioration.

Originally set up in July 2020, the service is a real success story. The hub team has seen over 30,000 patients since inception and was a finalist in the 2022 NHS Parliamentary Awards. Patient feedback has been extremely positive: 98% of patients rated the service as good to excellent and the service has been described by patients as “very slick” and technical and nursing staff as “kindly and efficient.”

The Assessment Service has moved from its previous temporary location in UHBW’s Education and Research Centre near the Bristol Royal Infirmary. It is hoped that the service’s relocation to the Galleries in Broadmead, Bristol will be for the longer term. The site offers patients, excellent transport links and accessibility.
