Use of face coverings when coming to hospital

From Monday 15 June, anyone coming to one of our hospitals will need to wear a face covering at all times, except very young children or those exempt for medical reasons.

This guidance has been introduced by the Department of Health and Social Care to help reduce the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19) and keep patients, visitors - including people with carer responsibilities, patient supporters, personal assistants and staff safe.

People infected with COVID-19 can have very mild or no respiratory symptoms (asymptomatic) and can transmit the virus to others without being aware of it.

What does this mean for me?

We can all play a role in reducing the spread of coronavirus and keeping our hospitals safe. If you are coming to hospital as a visitor or for planned outpatient care, it is important that you wear a face covering at all times. This is for your safety and the safety of other patients and staff.

Face coverings can be cloth and/or homemade, and advice on how to wear and make one can be found on the government website. Face coverings worn as part of religious beliefs or cultural practice are also acceptable, providing they are not loose and cover the mouth and nose.

We are asking that you plan in advance and bring a face covering with you whenever possible, but if you do not have one available when you come to hospital, please see a member of staff on arrival and we will provide you with one.

It is also important that you please continue to observe social distancing (two metres) wherever possible, wash your hands regularly and use hand sanitiser.

We recognise that not everyone will be able to wear a face covering. Exceptions can be made for those with respiratory conditions, sensory needs and people who may find it difficult to manage them correctly.

How do I use a face covering?

Wash your hands or use hand sanitiser before putting your face covering on and after taking it off. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth at all times.

If using a reusable face covering, store used ones in a plastic bag until you have an opportunity to wash them.

It is also important that you please continue to observe social distancing (two metres) wherever possible, wash your hands regularly and use hand sanitiser.

Does my child need to wear a face covering when attending Bristol Royal Hospital for Children?

We understand that wearing a face covering may not be possible for all children, but if your child is able to tolerate a facial covering then this would be advised. If you’re the parent or carer accompanying the child, you will be asked to wear a face covering. Exceptions can be made for those with respiratory conditions, sensory needs and people who may find it difficult to manage them correctly.

What do I do if I use lip reading to communicate?

If you are deaf or hearing impaired and use lip reading to communicate, please let our staff know and we can explore a range of options available to ensure that we can communicate effectively with you.
